Q&A with Lewis Miller
Kassatex: What made you design a flower tote?
Lewis Miller: It was honestly a very New York moment and a subtle nod to the Flower Flash which are public street art floral installations made with fresh flowers that we have been surprising commuters with since 2016. I was on the subway one morning holding an armful of peonies—huge, fluffy ones—and I noticed people staring. Others trying to steal a look….For a second I thought, what did I do? And then I realized… they weren’t looking at me. They were looking at the flowers. That sparked the initial idea of the Flower Flash but in an indirect way, it also played a role in the creation of this tote!!
Seeing people’s faces and their reactions to a bundle of vibrant peonies on a packed subway car…it was this beautiful reminder that people are absolutely starved for beauty. For living things. For nature.
That moment feels very similar to the feeling behind my Flower Flash installations. When you suddenly see flowers erupting out of a trash can or spilling over a monument, people stop. They smile. Their whole day shifts. Flowers have that power. But there I was… awkwardly trying to protect these gorgeous peonies on the subway from getting crushed. Years later, in partnership with Kassatex, we have designed something truly beautiful to carry your flowers in.

Kassatex: What problem does the flower tote solve?
LM: Flowers are oddly difficult to carry. You see it everywhere. People holding them sideways, trying to jam them into a square grocery bag, stems bending, blooms crushed. There’s even that hilarious series of photos of Jeremy Allen White walking around struggling with bouquets. Flowers deserve better. Jeremy deserves better. LOL.
This tote is designed specifically for them. It holds stems upright, protects the blooms, and lets them breathe. Functionally, it’s incredibly practical—but visually, it’s also quite striking.
You’re not hiding the flowers. You’re showcasing them.

Kassatex: How does this connect to your philosophy about flowers?
LM: My entire career has been about celebrating flowers. In my studio, at events, or through the spontaneous joy of a Flower Flash, the goal has always been the same: create an emotional response. Flowers shouldn’t feel precious or inaccessible. They should be part of daily life. The flower tote encourages that. It turns something ordinary—walking down the street—into a moment of beauty.

Kassatex: Why release this as a limited-edition drop?
LM: Because the best things should feel a little magical. The Flower Flash was never meant to be predictable. It appears unexpectedly, disappears quickly, and becomes this fleeting moment people remember. I wanted the tote to have a bit of that same energy. It’s a limited drop. Coveted. A little bit elusive. Something flower lovers will treasure.
Kassatex: Tell us about the inspiration behind the design.
LM: The inspiration actually came from a friend and beloved early supporter of MD and our Flower Flashes, Meredith Melling. She actually helped fund our first sunflower Flower Flash nearly 10 years ago! Meredith shared a photograph of a vintage flower tote she had found, and the moment I saw it I thought, this is brilliant. It sparked the idea that we could reinterpret something classic but elevate it—make it more sculptural, more functional, more beautiful.
So in a way, the design came full circle. And it is SO FITTING that she is our muse/model for these pics!! It’s truly a full circle moment. What started as a shared inspiration became something entirely new.

Kassatex: What do you hope people feel when they carry it?
LM: Pride. Joy. Maybe even a bit of theater.
Flowers are inherently dramatic. When someone walks down the street carrying them, people notice. Heads turn. The city softens for a moment. If this tote encourages people to bring flowers home more often, to gift them more freely, or to simply carry beauty through the city—then I think we’ve done something special.
Kassatex: Why is this a must-have for flower lovers?
LM: Because there really isn’t anything like it. It’s not just a tote—it’s a tool for living with flowers. Thoughtfully designed. Highly functional. And, like all good things in the floral world, slightly fleeting. Once they’re gone, they’re gone. And honestly? I have a feeling people are going to love them and gift them to friends and family.
