Q&A With SortJoy
Kassatex: What are your top tips for organizing a linen closet after the holidays?
SortJoy: Organizing always starts with decluttering— so take a hard look at your linens. If you’re like most people, you probably have some old towels and sheets that are damaged or don’t fit your current needs.
You may want to think about separating your linens by season (summer beach towels in one place, warm winter duvets in another), by type, or by room— depending on your needs, but categorizing only comes after decluttering!
Kassatex: The secret to organizing success:
SortJoy: Reminding yourself that it’s not about being perfect, it’s about being realistic. An imperfect system you will maintain is better than a perfect one that will fall apart right away.
Kassatex: Never start an organizing project without:
SortJoy: Decluttering first! It’s often amazing how much you can get rid of, and that makes organizing so much easier.
Kassatex: What’s one underrated linen closet essential that every home should have?
SortJoy: A washing bag like the one from our friends at Guppyfriend! It catches microplastics that come off synthetic fabrics when you wash them.
Kassatex: What’s the best way to declutter a linen closet after the holiday rush?
SortJoy: The goal of decluttering is to remove anything that does not add net value to your life. When determining what adds net value and what doesn’t, you should ask the following simple questions:
-
Do I use it?
If it disappeared today, would I need to replace it?
Does it give me joy?
If the item in question does not check any of these boxes, it’s time to free yourself of any judgment and honestly evaluate why it’s still taking up your space. After the holidays the perfect time to pare things down and make room for a fresh start.
Kassatex: What’s the first step in organizing a linen closet for maximum efficiency?
SortJoy: The first step is creating categories. For example, designate separate spaces for bedding, towels, and seasonal items. Categories will be specific to you, so don’t be afraid to create categories specific to your needs. Once you have your categories, bins or baskets can help contain things neatly. Labeling is key, whether using a bin clip or labeling the face of your shelves directly, so you always know what goes where.
Kassatex: How do you recommend sorting bedding and bath towels for easy access year-round?
SortJoy: We recommend sorting by use and frequency. Keep everyday towels and bedding at eye level, where they’re easy to grab. Store guest linens and less frequently used items, like seasonal bedding, on higher or lower shelves. If you’re going to use bins, make sure they are lightweight and well-sized for your needs. Heavy bins can be harder to use, making the space less functional.
Kassatex: Are there specific tips for folding towels to maximize closet space?
SortJoy: Yes! But the most important thing is to mind what works for you. There is no “right” or “wrong” way to do things. Use the “tri-fold” method: fold the towel lengthwise into thirds, then fold it in half or into thirds depending on your shelf height. This creates a compact, uniform look that stacks easily. Alternatively, you can even try rolling towels and arranging them vertically in bins or baskets.
Kassatex: What are your best tips for folding and organizing to save closet space?
SortJoy: Consistency is key. Stick with one folding method so everything stacks neatly. If space is tight, store bulkier items like comforters in vacuum-sealed bags to reduce their size. Baskets or bins are perfect for small items like washcloths or pillowcases, keeping everything accessible and tidy.
Kassatex: What’s the easiest way to fold and store linens for a clutter-free closet?
SortJoy: For ease and simplicity, fold sheets and pillowcases into sets. Place the folded sheets and an extra pillowcase inside one pillowcase from the set, so everything stays together. For blankets or duvets, fold them flat or roll them tightly, and store them on shelves or in bins labeled by size and/or season.
