Introducing: Resol

Inspired by a love of the beach and a commitment to craftsmanship, Resol is all about bringing the spirit of coastal living– and the artistry behind it– into everyday spaces. Founded in 2020 by two best friends from opposite sides of the world, the brand celebrates the beauty of traditional techniques, sustainable materials and slow design. Each piece is handmade in Bali using natural rattan and time-honored weaving methods passed down through generations, resulting in pieces that are durable, thoughtful and one of a kind. We caught up with the team at Resol to talk about their design philosophy, their impact on artisan communities and why handmade goods are more meaningful than ever.

Q&A With Resol

Kassatex: What inspired you to start your company, and how did you begin working with artisans?
Resol: Resol was founded in 2020 by two best friends who share similar passions: a love of the beach, and of beautiful, unique and sustainable products. Growing up, we spent countless summers up and down different coastlines, half a world apart– in the US & Australia. We explored different beaches, built memories, and saw the importance of spending quality time outdoors with our friends and loved ones. During inspiring trips to Bali, Tulum and other small coastal towns, we fell in love with the beautifully crafted pieces that were made by talented, local artisans. In awe of their generational dedication to these traditional designs and unique craftsmanship, it has since been our mission to have a long-lasting impact on these artisans by supporting their products’ distribution. We work with small, family owned suppliers, to make sure profits stay in the local area where the goods are produced.

Kassatex: What traditional techniques do your artisans use that make your products unique?
Resol: Our pieces are made by hand in Bali using renewable and sustainable resources and have been designed with longevity in mind. Natural, high-quality rattan is durable against the elements, resistant to cracking, sustainable, and is low maintenance. Our pieces are not mass produced and take skill, time, and dedication to weave in the traditional methods passed down by generations. The weave of artisan produced rattan chairs differs noticeably from mass produced chairs made in China, where the weave is visibly less dense and uneven, which affects the strength and longevity of the chair.

Kassatex: How has working with artisans influenced your brand’s design philosophy?
Resol: It is always a joy to connect with and work with people living in other countries, to learn about their way of life, culture and customs. Our philosophy is to support the manufacture of traditional, tried and true designs that are beautiful, unique and practical. These one of a kind pieces can have a hard time finding a market and exposure in our mass produced, throw-away world, so we want to make sure these hand crafted goods get the attention they deserve.

Kassatex: What impact has your business had on the artisan communities you work with?
Resol: By buying from small, locally owned businesses, we know that the profits and paychecks stay in the communities where our goods are made. Beyond the artisans making the items, this also creates employment opportunities in the larger community for rattan processing, transport and distribution of finished goods. This makes a large percentage of locals personally invested in sustainable and eco-friendly growth, harvesting and manufacturing practices of rattan furniture, which in turn ensures the preservation of their traditional rattan furniture making methods and knowledge.

Kassatex: What excites you most about the future of artisan-made goods in today’s market?
Resol: As consumers become more cynical about mass produced items, particularly their effects on the environment and questions around ethical production, it is only natural that there is a growing demand for quality, handcrafted and authentic goods. We feel this natural progression will put more resources and opportunity into the hands of smaller, more ethical producers to showcase their traditional and distinctive products.
