At Kassatex, we’re always inspired by brands that blend timeless design with meaningful craftsmanship—and Makaua does just that. Rooted in tradition and driven by purpose, Makaua creates beautifully handwoven home goods that honor the artistry of generations past while embracing a modern, minimalist aesthetic. Founded in 2002 and now led by a trio of sisters, the brand works closely with artisans in Mexico to craft pieces that are as intentional as they are beautiful. We sat down with the team behind Makaua to learn more about their story, their commitment to community, and the incredible craft behind each piece.

Q&A With Makaua

Kassatex: What inspired you to start your company, and how did you begin working with artisans?
Makaua: Makaua was founded in 2002 by our mother, Beatriz, to combine traditional craftsmanship with contemporary design. She recognized the skill of artisans in Mexico, and created a platform to showcase their talent while providing them with fair and steady income. The name Makaua, meaning “from hand to hand” in Nahuatl, reflects our commitment to handmade craftsmanship and human connection. Today, the company is run by Beatriz’s three daughters—Paola, Lorena, and Andrea—who continue her legacy, blending modern design with artisanal tradition while upholding sustainability and quality. We are so proud to be a women-led and owned company!

Kassatex: What traditional techniques do your artisans use that make your products unique?
Makaua: Our artisans use centuries-old palm weaving techniques that have been passed down through generations. Each piece is carefully handwoven using select palm leaves, ensuring both quality and sustainability. The process involves intricate hand-braiding, sewing, and shaping methods that give our products their unique texture and character. What makes them truly special is the human touch—no two pieces are exactly alike, carrying the mark of the artisan who made them.

Kassatex: How has working with artisans influenced your brand’s design philosophy?
Makaua: Working closely with artisans has shaped our philosophy of merging tradition with modern simplicity. We believe in the beauty of handmade imperfections and embrace the idea that less is more. Our designs are minimal, elegant, and timeless, ensuring that the craftsmanship remains the focal point. The collaboration with artisans has also taught us patience, respect for materials, and the value of slow, intentional production.

Kassatex: What impact has your business had on the artisan communities you work with?
Makaua: Makaua has provided a dignified, fair, and stable income to artisans, many of whom are women who now have greater financial independence and opportunities for their families. Our work has helped sustain traditional weaving techniques, preventing them from fading away in an increasingly industrialized world. By valuing their craft at an international level, we are not only preserving cultural heritage but also instilling a sense of pride and purpose in the artisans we work with.

Kassatex: What excites you most about the future of artisan-made goods in today’s market?
Makaua: All of it! There is a growing appreciation for handmade, sustainable, and ethically produced goods in today’s market, which excites us. Consumers are increasingly looking for products with meaning, craftsmanship, and a story behind them. We see a future where artisan-made goods are not just valued as decorative pieces but as essential elements of a conscious lifestyle—one that respects people, traditions, and the planet. We are excited to continue innovating while staying true to our roots, expanding our reach, and connecting more people with the beauty of handmade craftsmanship.
