Q&A with Intiearth

Kassatex: What inspired you to start your company, and how did you begin working with artisans?
Intiearth: I traveled to many regions across Peru in search of the diverse textile offerings which vary widely between regions. I knew I wanted to connect with the makers and work directly with them. I would visit local makers and learn more about their craft and traditions, it took time and patience to establish relationships and build trust.

Kassatex: What traditional techniques do your artisans use that make your products unique?
Intiearth: Sacred Valley Pillows- in an effort to recreate the traditional and very popular frazada cushions made from vintage textiles, I sought to create my own line of textiles made in the ancestral techniques. Pigments are made with locally foraged botanical materials to dye the wool. The wool is sourced from the local communities, waged and hand spun. They are made on the traditional back strap loom, The Peruvian Ikat Pillows are made from traditional textiles unique to the mountains of Northern Peru, known as Pañón or “milk cloth.” This fabric is commonly used by mothers to carry their babies, goods, and for dancing.

Kassatex: How has working with artisans influenced your brand’s design philosophy?
Intiearth: I’m often most inspired by the art and technique of the individual maker and when designing I want to capture the essence of their craft.

Kassatex: What impact has your business had on the artisan communities you work with?
Intiearth: Many weavers are mothers who focus on caring for their families. Weaving gives them the flexibility to work from home while still tending to their loved ones. It also provides a valuable economic opportunity, allowing them to earn a fair wage in rural areas where job opportunities can be limited. Additionally, weaving allows them to preserve a craft passed down through generations, enabling them to teach this skill to their children.

Kassatex: What excites you most about the future of artisan-made goods in today’s market?
Intiearth: It’s truly wonderful to witness a growing interest in products that carry a rich history and offer greater sustainability than mass-produced alternatives. Owning something in your home that is thoughtfully crafted and meaningful creates not only a lasting impression but also contributes to a positive impact.
