Kassatex: How did you start designing?
Christina Kim: My ex-husband and I bought a 100 year old house to start a family in and renovated it ourselves. I was hooked!

Kassatex: Three designers who inspire you:
CK: David Hicks for his brilliant use of pattern, India Mahdavi for her sublime use of color and Lenny Kravitz for his 70s opulence and rock and roll vibe.

Kassatex: First design project?
Christina Kim: My own house! My ex husband and I bought the cutest little A- frame house – 100 years old and full of charming 1920s tile patterns that I still think about all the time. I clipped from magazines, sketched, collected samples and learned everything I could about renovating. I filled it with vintage and flea market finds and had an absolute ball.

Kassatex: Favorite room to design?
CK: My favorite space to design is a cabana. It’s an anything goes kind of space where clients are more willing to be playful.

Kassatex: Three classic paint colors you always use?
CK: Farrow and Ball Scallop, Farrow and Ball Dimity and Benjamin Moore Wrought Iron.

Kassatex: A bathroom must always include?
CK: Flattering lighting!

Kassatex: What is currently on your bedside table?
CK: Water (mixed with LMNT Citrus Salt), a few pairs of reading glasses, and What I Ate for One Year by Stanley Tucci and a stack of business books

Kassatex: First thing you do in the morning?
CK: Have a mug of piping hot water.

Kassatex: Forever favorite hotel?
CK: The Gramercy Park Hotel (now gone!) I’ll always love this place for the moody artistic vibes and my memories.

Kassatex: Currently listening to?
CK: So many podcasts! A current new fave is Aspire by Emma Grede

Kassatex: How has AI been incorporated into your design process?
CK: We recently started using an app called ArchSynth that takes an image, say of a chandelier and turns it into a 3d model that we can pop into our renderings.

Kassatex: Three decor trends you wish would disappear:
CK: Maximalist Granny, open floor plans

Kassatex: Favorite cost-effective brands you love to use when mixing high/low.
CK: CB2, Etsy, The Socialite Family

Kassatex: Most exciting moment of your career thus far:
CK: This moment – I just bought a cozy house on a hill full of trees in a beach town in New Jersey. It’s like living in a fairy house. I’m “slow decorating” and savoring each design possibility. The Kips Bay Show House was also a thrill!

Kassatex: Finish this sentence:
CK: When in doubt in design …take the risk!
